how does the capture video (.avi) function work (right click anywhere in the workspace)?

Yes it does kinda work. But As the system is highly optimised for reading data from disk for video playback, writing video to disk simultaneously can be problematic. So some users use a 3rd party screen capture utility. Or alternatively just record the DVI / HDMI output from your computer with a DVR.
